How to hire and retain an effective freelance developer: 3 Proven tips to help guide you.

Updated: Sep 1, 2021

Keep in mind that the desired freelance developer will be someone you and/or members of your team will communicate with regularly, it is therefore important that you choose someone with whom you can communicate easily.

There comes a time in the growth story of any small business when you will need the services of a developer or at the very least a website builder-type of professional. This will be the case even if your business does not involve the sale of IT services.

After all, you will, at some point need to get a website, email server, domain name, etc. And all these tools require ongoing monitoring and upkeep. As a small business owner, you may not have the resources to hire someone fulltime.

You may not be able to afford to employ a full time IT specialist or software developer. During these times, you may need to hit the world wide web in search of a software developer. Now, there are many reputable platforms out there on which you will be able to sort through an array of qualified men and women from all over the world to help bring your vision to life.

There are sites like Upwork, Freelancer, etc. Although I have found that the venue does not matter as the type of help you attract, it is helpful to have some guidelines as to what type of person you will want to work with.

Based on my personal experience, these are the three things to look for when trying to solicit the help of a freelance software developer.

Experience

I cannot possibly stress this point enough. The internet is full of folks with varying experiences as far as the topic at hand is concerned. For this reason, it is super important to take all the necessary measures to ensure that the folk(s) you look to hire have the necessary background to complete your project.

Communication

You will need to solicit the help of someone for whom the concept of communication is not a foreign one. Keep in mind that the desired freelance developer will be someone you and/or members of your team will communicate with regularly, it is therefore important that you choose someone with whom you can communicate easily.

Professional Conduct

Above all else, think it behooves you to check the references of your proposed developer to ensure that they conduct business in a professional manner. This point is important for obvious reasons.

Try to obtain independent references to check up on the thoughts and opinions of those who have done business with your prospective developer.

Sites like Upwork and Freelancer have robust systems via which folks can leave comments and reviews about the freelancers they work with. Conduct your very own research to get an idea about the person you are looking to hire.
